Gold in Brazil was discovered in the 17th century and impacted South America in numerous ways both culturally and economically. The prosperity and wealth this brought also created much pollution and environmental destruction in the area. The Portuguese and slaves at the time were rushed to the mines and thousands of ‘garimpeiro’s mined the area’s daily. The gold rush proved to be the longest in history and as a result many years later created a detriment to the earth, in fact one mountain in Brazil was completely desimated and is now a vast quarry. David Elia’s Garimpeiro Collection was created using terracotta an adaptable and organic material widely used in Brazil. Jewels just like gold nuggets can be displayed on the small ridged terracotta levels reminiscent of mountain plateau’s from which gold came from.
