AZULEJOLOGIA
Azulejologia
Both Portuguese and Brazilians alike have historical ties to ancient ceramic tiles for numerous purposes, some for decoration others for imperative infrastructure. After the 16th century Portugal truly embraced the beauty and intricate details of the painted tiles. Colonial Brazil started to acquire a keen taste as well due to the impermeable nature of ceramic tiles for the outside of dwellings.
Elia’s inspiration for the Azulejologia was inspired from his theme of Brazilian historical references. The influence of many different nations and cultures can be seen throughout these tiles, in fact stemming from Egyptians, Islamic, Ottoman, Iberian and many others.
Specific to this work Elia has collected authentic ceramic tiles that vary in date, from the 1960’s industrialization era, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Pombalino era, all the way to the Moorish influence. Elia wanted to highlight this beautiful and historical slice of history and how it has travelled from ancient times to present moment’s. The fragile nature seems to be a reminder of past civilisations due to the cracks in some pieces.
