About the Designer

Edelhard Heinrich Otto Harlis, called Eddie Harlis, was born on July 12, 1928 in Osnabrück. Even at school, Harlis dealt intensively with questions of form and construction. After the Second World War, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then studied at the then craft art school in Hildesheim.

From 1953 he worked as a freelance interior architect and designer.

In the fifties he lived and worked at times with other artists, including Günther Uecker , Hannes Esser and Bernd and Hilla Becher , in the Einbrunger Mühle artists' colony in Düsseldorf.

Eddie Harlis died on July 3, 1985 in Düsseldorf of complications from a stomach ulcer.

Eddie Harlis, who had just finished his exams at the Hildesheim Art School, joined Thonet in the 1950s. His chair S 652 for the new building of the Kurhaus Wildungen was the first major design for Thonet in the post-war period.

In 1954 he designed the shell chair S 664, which is now considered a design classic. Other designs for Thonet include the chair S 667 (introduced here), the armchair ST 683 and the armchair ST 805.
